On November 19, 1919, Concordia Lutheran Church celebrated its first worship with fifteen people and few visitors in attendance. We shared pastors with other Lutheran churches in southeast Missouri and services were held every other Sunday each month at different locations.
In 1927 the congregation purchased a building on College Avenue (now Wakefield), formerly used as a warehouse for automobiles. The building was remodeled and used as a house of worship until 1951-52 when Concordia was able to build a new and larger church and sanctuary.
In 1978-1979, in response to increased attendance, the congregation expanded the existing building and basement and began the construction of a connected church office and educational facility. In 2002, the congregation approved a plan to construct the Family Life Center.
2002 was a significant year for Concordia. The congregation made a big decision to go in a new direction to spread the gospel in the community by opening a Lutheran preschool. The school remained open until May 2019.
The congregation celebrated its 100th anniversary on August 11, 2019 with the theme “From Him, Through Him, To Him.” Former Pastor Rev. Ken Sievers (1976-1985) preached the sermon and was assisted by Rev. David Dissen. A luncheon and afternoon program followed.
In September 2019, Rev Alan Wollenburg retired after 20 years of service at Concordia. In October that same year, it was announced that Rev. Mark Martin had accepted the Call as Intentional Interim Pastor at Concordia. His first Sunday service was on December 1, 2019.
In March 2020, everything changed with the COVID-19 pandemic. Concordia had to learn a new way to worship and serve the community. Worship services, Bible studies, Sunday School, and VBS were moved online to Facebook. In May 2020, Concordia was able to return to in-person worship while still offering services live on Facebook.
Pentecost Sunday, May 31, 2020 was a special day for Concordia: five youth and two adults Confirmed their faith during the worship service.
After a lengthy interim due in large part to the COVID-19 Pandemic, Concordia extended a Divine Call to her next permanent pastor. In January 2021, that process unfolded and Concordia decided it best to seek her next pastor from the two seminaries of the LCMS.
April 28, 2021 was a joyous day for Concordia - a new pastor was coming! Announced at Call Day 2021 at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Matthew Berry was placed at Concordia. On July 4, 2021 the now Reverend Matthew Berry was ordained and installed as Concordia's new, permanent pastor.
Today, Concordia receives Christ's forgiveness of sins, eternal life, and salvation while equipping and engaging others in Sikeston and the greater Bootheel area.
